What is scratchboard?
Scratchboard is a clay coated hardboard panel that is coated with India ink. The black surface is scratched away to reveal the white clay beneath. For added dimension, colored inks can be added to the white areas and then scratched again for additional highlights and volume. This process is repeated as many times as it takes to achieve the desired result.
While highly time consuming as a medium, the level of fine detail that is able to be achieved creates dramatic and stunning works of art.
See below for video of the process.
